It’s our bad habits that make us less creative
Man is such a wonderful creature blessed with the faculty of reasoning and creativity. It is a baloney that only those whom we consider as “intelligent” can be rightfully labeled as “creative”.
We all have innate potentials to be amazingly creative. Most of us fail to see those powers lurking beneath our conscious self. It really sounds mediocre if you feel that you’re no good than most people. The truth is you can be as creative as you can. You probably just don’t know how.
Then why are most people not creative? Why only a handful of individuals can tap their vast creative powers?
Nature may have something to do with it. But the “nurture” part also plays a significant role as well. How? You see, as we grow, we tend to develop certain habits that hinder us from exploring the creative part of our selves. Sounds hopeless? Not at all. They can be minimized or eliminated for good if we are determined to modify our behavior.
Want to know what those discouraging habits are? Better take a look at them and see which one you feel guilty of:
- Too much counsel- Listening to people who attained success is not bad at all. However, if you listen to too many people with often conflicting opinions, you’ll get nowhere. You become too dependent on what they think. It crushes your ability to think for yourself. Each person’s success story is unique. The circumstances and methods by which they arrive at the summit of their success is different. Yours is likewise distinct.
- Doing two things at the same time- We are all probably guilty of this crime at one point or another. How does this habit stop us from become resourceful and creative? You can’t walk forward and walk backward simultaneously, can you? Likewise, when creating something in your head focus on it. Create until you feel the cup is already full. As soon as the cup becomes full, then you can start sorting out those that merit your attention and those that do not.
- Perfectionist attitude- You want to execute things in absolute perfection. You leave no room for sloppiness. Committing mistakes is blasphemy. If you have an extreme fear of screwing up, then you’re heading to that direction. Success and failure are two sides of the same coin. So are the risks and opportunities. They always go to together. This paranoia will only make you less creative and more conservative.
- Self-doubt- Crazy ideas brought so much change to mankind in the past century. New ideas can be very uncertain but it’s a necessary risk if you want to make a difference. Lack of self-confidence will only bring you down. Remember Einstein once said, “Imagination is more powerful than knowledge”.
- Persecution from other people- Sounds very harsh. Yes, indeed it is. What I’m trying to point at is the persecutory attitude of some people to discourage you from realizing something important. They bombard you with their own prophesies of failure. The fact is: there is always a room for failure. But this shouldn’t be an excuse for you to slack.
- Information overload- The problem with a lot of people is that they are too cautious about what they want to pursue. They waste too much attention on weighing the pros and cons. The down side is, you have less time to act on your idea.
We are guilty to some of the blunders mentioned above. Realizing is the first part to rectifying those habits. The big part is working at it.
